建築様式は近代に入って過去を参照することをやめてしまいました。1つの理由として、テクノロジーの飛躍的な発達によって社会全体が未来指向になったことがあります。人々の関心はこれから可能になるであろう未来の生活に向けられるようになりました。過去には何も見い出せなくなったわけです。そして人々のこころに次のような信仰が生まれます。「社会生活は現在まだ発展途上にあり、これからもっと良くなるはずだ。現在は不完全。未来は完全。」こういう意識は近代の特徴ですね。
しかし、「未来は完全」という意識はテクノロジーの発達が頂点に達したことによって揺らぎました。それは、宇宙飛行船アポロが月面に着陸して人類が初めて月を歩いたことです。人類がとうとう月まで行ってしまった。この象徴的な出来事は「テクノロジーが頂点に行き着いた、もう後は現状維持しかない」という意識を生み出したと考えられています。それほどの出来事だったんですね。
というわけで、建築様式の参照源が過去から未来に移り、その未来が怪しくなった、という観点をみてみました。
look for future
In the transition of architectural style, the past great Greek or Roman Style had been refered a lot as principal models. But since the beginning of 20th century it has stopped to be paid attention toward the past old buildings. This is because new materials like glass and steel could be available to building stuffs. Social sense look at the future. So the sense that present feature of architecture should be incomplete future has got to be common. This is the point that there must be a big difference from the age before 19th century. In those days the current architecture was incomplete and should look for the great past. Therefore the direction of attitude of seeking for the ideal model points 180 degree opposite way.
