敷地の条件はすべて異なります。したがって、そこで設計した建物のプランはすべて固有解ということになります。名作と言われる建物でも、その敷地にあってこそ名作であって、建築家のアイディアはそこでしか成り立たないはずだ、というのは一つの真実です。
そこで、近代建築の特徴を「機械」と定義したコルビュジェの言葉のもつインパクトを、この真実に対する挑戦と考えてみようと思います。
「機械」は、いつでも、どこでも同じように機能することを意味しています。しかし敷地の条件はすべて異なります。地形的にも、歴史的にも、経済的にも。それにもかかわらず、そこに建つ建物は「機械」である。こう言ったわけですね。ここには「近代」の本質があります。それは「受け継がない」ことです。コルビュジェは住宅のことを指していましたが、それならなおさら敷地の条件は大きな比重を持つでしょう。重く、固い、過去からの重圧を払いのけようとする当時の意気込みが表れた言葉だったと思います。

Building site is very only one on the earth. The site has various layers, physical and meta-physical. And the current state of affairs of site will give several condition in economical, historical or political flow. All of them are organized as the only one given condition. This is single. An idea for realizing a building on that site can reflect in the same way as different projects but practical details must be valid only for that site. Please remenber that modern architecture agitated that a building should work as machine. 'Machine' was the key word. It means whenever and wherever a machine can work in the same way. The agitation might attack the fact that an answer is the only one for the building site.
