柱の役割は梁や床を支えることです。梁や床を常にその位置に保ちながら、上部にある屋根や壁、床などの重量を負担し力を地面に伝える働きをしているのですね。力学的に見ると柱は上部の応力を下部に伝達する機能を担っています。柱は力が流れる「パイプ」です。
しかし、柱が持っている働きは他にもあります。１つは視覚的な働き。これは柱が垂直方向を示していることからきています。柱は重力の作用を目に見えるかたちで表していますから、外観を重く見せたり、軽く見せたりするデザイン要素としてポイントとなる部位です。また光が来る方向を示すこともありますね。もう１つは象徴的な働きです。柱には何かのアイデンティティーが込められていることがあります。例えば「大黒柱」というと全体を支える働き者、中心的な役割をもつものといった意味が込められていますね。また「御柱祭」のようなお祭りに使われる場合も見られます。宗教的な含意をもつこともあるわけです。

Column is an essential element in the structure. Against gravity it supports a mass above it to keep its position. And column has one more meaning. It can play a role as a symbol for something. Sometimes religious meaning is given to it. Feature of column can represent human being's will for declaration of victory. An action of putting up, erecting a pole on the ground remind column's fanction as symbol. However function as a supporting part and role as a symbol are concerned. They might link to each other in the back of literal level.
