自然に対しては人工という言葉がカウンターパートですが、大自然については対になる言葉も概念も見当たりません。自然は人間が創ったものではないにしても、人間が理解でき把握できるものです。大自然は空間的にも時間的にもヒューマンスケールを超えたものや、通常の判断基準や美意識から大きく逸脱するものです。人間の意識の中にもあるのかもしれません。サブライムという概念が過去を参照すると見つかります。
なぜ、自然と大自然を区別するのかと言えば、大自然を考えることで自然というものが建築の内側に存在することを明らかにできるからです。このことは、我々が暮らしている環境にある自然は人間に飼いならされているはずだという考えに基づいていますね。もう一つの理由は、建築という概念の外部を考える足がかりとすることができるからです。外部を考えるのは、とりもなおさず建築について常にいろいろな角度から考え続けることを意味しますね。
Nature as capital N
The alternatives are art and nature. A concept of architecture might sit in this level. Human beings cannot control nature well but can understand it. And human beings can imagine what they should do in order to survive against nature. In the other aspect architecture can include nature and coexist together. Beyond the alternatives the notion of Nature capital N would emerge as the concept of "sublime".
