様式の起源は18世紀にあります。その契機は古代遺跡の発掘が進み、それらを調査、測量する作業が進んだことです。その結果、古代建築物の詳細が具体的に分かってきたんですね。ローマ様式、ギリシア様式のような明確な整理分類はこうした流れの中で行われました。注意すべきなのは、18世紀のこの時代になると新しい様式が生まれなくなり、過去にあった様式を参照することに重きが置かれるようになった点です。それらはリバイバルというかたちで現われます。フランスではブルボン王朝が倒され貴族の建築様式だったロココは主役から降り、ナポレオンの新古典主義が現われました。この様式は古代ローマ建築を理想とするリバイバルでした。この転換は建築史上最大のものです。それまで現在進行形だった様式の展開が、この時期を境に過去形になりました。リバイバルとは過去に真理とオリジナルを求めるものです。ここには起源をさかのぼるという意識が見られます。ちなみに、20世紀の近代建築はこの意識を断ち切ることが当初の目的と考えることができます。

During this century there was a big theme which was shared by related people about ancient research. That was to seek origin in the perspective of previous architectures. So after Roman Style, Greek one was getting interested in. And the spirit of reaching after origin promoted to step into Egyptian age. The interest in architectural progress went backward from Rome to Egypt.
